Dr. Lee is Professor of Pharmaceutics who has served as the inaugural GlaxoSmithKline Chair in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery for two 5-year terms from July 2004 to June 2014. He received his B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from National Taiwan University and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Michigan State University. He began his career in the industry and held senior research and management positions in pharmaceutical R&D and drug delivery at several major pharmaceutical companies over a 25-year span: Ciba-Geigy, SmithKline and Schering-Plough. In between, he also served as a tenured full professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto from 1988 to 1993. Prior to returning to Toronto in July 2004 for the GlaxoSmithKline Chair, he was Senior Director of Pharmaceutical R&D at Schering-Plough Research Institute in Kenilworth, NJ. Throughout his tenure at the Faculty of Pharmacy, he continues to teach graduate and undergraduate courses and conduct research funded by CIHR, NSERC as well as industrial sources and trained graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Dr. Lee's research interests include enhanced delivery of poorly soluble drugs, controlled release nitric oxide for diabetic wound healing, modified-release dosage forms, hydrogels and polymeric drug delivery systems, swellable and erodible matrix systems, kinetics and mechanisms of drug release, and diffusion and mass transfer in polymers. He has 87 scientific publications and 43 patents/patent applications including 22 issued patents and was an inaugural Editorial Board member of both the Journal of Controlled Release (1983-1997) and European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (1992-1998). He also served on the Board of Governors of the Controlled Release Society (1986-1989) and was a founding Chair of the AAPS Modified Release Focus Group (2002-2004). He currently serves on the Editorial Boards of Molecular Pharmaceutics, Biopharmaceutics & Drug Disposition, Pharmaceutical Development and Technology as well as Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B. He is a Fellow of AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science; elected 1996) and AAPS (American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists; elected 2013).
